7. In our good news stories our quiz team finished 5th in the Liverpool Area Quiz which was won by Skelmersdale.
Mark Shaw has been promoted to Class 1
George Parry was asked to assess an new referee from the professional footballer's ranks. It was a publicity stunt by Neil Ruddock and Liverpool FC.
The meeting was suspended for a short break.
8. A talk on report writing was given by Steve Catterall and he expressed the need to get it right.
9. Eric Garner gave us a talk on the job of the assessor. Eric is an assessor for the Premier League and he told of what he would look for when assessing a referee. The report he must write contains 8 sections. The difference to the County forms is that there is no appearance section. He suggested that the way situations are handled is down to the individual so the assessor must be open minded. A question was raised by J.Towndrow as if anyone had seen a memo issued to assistant referees regarding referees' instructions. Apparently some refs were telling assistants to act "as per directive". This question was brought about when someone asked if Assessors listen to instructions given by referees prior to a game. Some members had heard of such a document but no-one had seen such a thing.
10. In our questions and advice section the younger members were advised to stamp on bad languge at the start or they may run into problems later in the game. An example was given where a referee had to send off 2 players with 5 minutes to go. The response from the players concerned was that it had been going on all game so why pick on them now.
11. George gave a lecture on The Referees Tool (the whistle) which was very amusing and informative. It explained how, when and why to use the whistle effectively. After giving a decision get away from the situation and don't give the players a chance to question you.
11. In AOB members were reminded of the Tom Oldham Quiz which is scheduled for Friday 14th March at St.Gregory's in Lydiate at 8PM.
12. The next meeting will be on February 24th 1997.
